Zakat
5 questions
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam — an obligatory annual contribution given by eligible Muslims to support those in need. It is due on every adult Muslim who possesses wealth above the Nisab (minimum threshold) for at least one full lunar year (Hawl). The standard rate is 2.5% of net eligible wealth.
The formula is:
Zakat = (Total Assets − Total Liabilities) × 2.5%
Assets that are zakatable include cash savings, gold and silver, business income and stock, investment profits, agricultural produce, and livestock. You can use our Zakat Calculator on the Donate page for a quick estimate.

The Nisab is typically based on the silver standard: 612.36 grams of silver, worth approximately USD 1,341 (at the current price of ~$2.19 per gram). If your net wealth exceeds this amount and has been held for one lunar year, Zakat becomes obligatory. Consult a qualified Islamic scholar for personal guidance.
Yes. DQK accepts Zakat donations and distributes them to eligible beneficiaries (the eight categories of Zakat recipients as defined in Islam). Select Sadaqah Donations as your cause on the Donate page and specify "Zakat" in your notes or contact us directly.
Zakat is an obligatory (fard) annual contribution required of eligible Muslims — it has specific rules about who must pay, how much, and to whom it can be given.
Sadaqah is voluntary charity given at any time, in any amount, for any good cause. It is not obligatory but is highly encouraged in Islam and earns great spiritual reward.
